Update on Monroe Micro-Community Move
Denver, CO — There’s no easy way to say this - this month we made the difficult decision to temporarily shut down operations at our Monroe Tiny Home Villages after the move in September. This decision comes after months of negotiations with multiple cities and counties about securing a new location to move the Villages to, and the disappointing truth is that none of those options are going to be available in time for the September move.
As I shared with our staff and our board earlier this month, this decision comes with three very important commitments from us:
None of our community members are going to end up back on the street because of this temporary pause in services. All of our current community members at Monroe are going to be moved into safe, supportive spaces, either through housing opportunities or by moving to one of our other micro-communities. This also means many will be able to continue working with their existing Case Managers and Peer Support Specialists at one of our other sites.
This shutdown will not lose us anything in terms of the key physical assets needed to operate the Villages. All of the physical infrastructure is going to be safely stored and kept for future use. We are incredibly grateful to our partners at the Urban Land Conservancy who are letting us use undeveloped land that is close to the current Monroe site to store all of the physical infrastructure for the Villages.
We are going to keep all of the committed, hard-working staff currently at Monroe. Over the next several months, we’ll be integrating these staff members into our teams at other sites.
Doing this work, we all learn that life is rarely a straight line. It comes with difficulties, setbacks, and disappointments. And I’m not going to lie, these next steps feel like all of the above. However, we also know firsthand that these setbacks and disappointments don’t define us. They may be a part of our story, but they’re not the whole story. I remain confident that that’s going to prove true for the Tiny Home Villages, too. I’ve seen this team respond to setbacks with resilience, tenancy, and kindness every single day, and I know we’re going to do it again with the Tiny Home Villages.
But we can’t do it alone. Your continued support will allow us to find a permanent home for the Villages and to continue operating our exceptional brand of people-focused, peer-led, transformational shelters for years to come.
Thank you for coming with us on this journey, and we’re excited to share what comes next!
